In Honor Of Father's Day: A Sugar Cookie Recipe

This weekend is Father's Day and around our house, Father's Day means making these homemade sugar cookies. They are the best dang sugar cookies in the whole world, complete with the best sugar cookie frosting to go with them. They are my husband's absolute favorite thing on planet earth and I just finished making a TRIPLE batch for him for his special weekend.

Ingredients for cookies-

1 and a half cups shortening
2 and a half cups sugar
3 eggs
1 and a half tsp vanilla
6 cups flour
1 tsp salt
1 and a half tsp baking soda
1 and a half tsp baking powder
5 tablespoons of milk

Ingredients for frosting-

3/4 cup shortening
3 and 3/4 cups powdered sugar
Half tsp salt
1/4 cup water
1 tsp vanilla

Cream shortening. Add sugar. Add eggs and beat well. Add the vanilla and dry ingredients alternately with the milk and mix well.

Roll the dough 1/8 inch thick on lightly floured surface and be cute like me and use heart shaped cutters to make your cookies.

Bake the cookies for 6 minutes in a 375 degree oven.

Let your cookies cool completely before frosting them.

I like to separate my frosting in different bowls and turn them different colors. I put the frosting in zip lock bags and frost them that way.

We've basically been celebrating since Monday because my husband has had the whole week off. It's been magical to say the least. We've watched so many movies, been to the playground multiple times each day, taken two swims every day, hit up Chuck E Cheese, did shopping, lounged, and just enjoyed being together. Simple small things that have been such a blast. I just love having my husband home SO SO SO much.

Father's Day means celebrating the father's in my life and that means my dad and my husband.

My dad had no example of a father since his father left his family when he was a tiny kid. Despite this he still managed to become the best dang father in the whole world. Always giving, always sacrificing, always loving. My dad is hands down the funniest guy you will ever meet with the best sense of humor in the world. He is handsome and kind and a joy. I love him more than anything.

My husband is an amazing father. He works harder than any man I know to provide for his family and to give James the very best of everything. James talks about daddy all day while he's at work and his whole face lights up whenever Derek is near. I couldn't ask for James to have a better example to look up to.

I am SO VERY BLESSED.

Happy Father's Day to every father out there! Thank you for being an example, thank you for being you!

Have a great weekend everyone, make these cookies, and spoil all the fathers in your life. They deserve it!

We are headed to see my family this weekend where I will make everyone a chocolate chip pancake breakfast, spoil the fathers in my life with presents, and enjoy good company. I'll be back Monday!

  3. yummy! this is very similar to the recipe I use! we make them for xmas every year and make different color frostings and frost them too! I will have to try putting it in ziplock bags, good idea! We always just had a bowl for each color and a knife to frost, very messy! My brother and I did it every year together. I need to start making them more throughout the year, love the hearts!!

    1. Yes, this totally started as a Christmas cookie recipe that my grandma would make and all the grand kids would help with. But once my husband and I got married... He got hooked on these and loves them so much that I now make them for practically every holiday! Sometimes we do the knife-bowl method but you're right, it's really messy and my cookies never come out as cute... It's super easy to just use zip lock bags and snip off one corner :) and you don't have to wash any bowls or utensils after either!
